Location

Renowned for its natural beauty and bird life, the Mývatn area is familiar to most Icelanders as a summertime destination. However, many who visit in winter find it to be a memorable experience. Mývatn has a vibrant cultural life as well as good facilities for live music performance. The community center Skjólbrekka, opened in 1955, is located south of Mývatn at Skútustaðir. The church Reykjahlíðarkirkja, dedicated in 1962, stands along the edge of the lava flow north of Lake Mývatn.
