About
Music in Mývatn County has been held every Easter since 1998. The festival has the distinction of being the only winter music festival in Iceland outside the Reykjavík area that focuses on classical music. Each year, the festival features two concerts with varying programs. A chamber concert is always held at Skjólbrekka on Holy Thursday, followed by a more ceremonious concert at Reykjahlíðarkirkja on Good Friday.
Over the years, each festival has had its own distinct character, depending on that year’s programs and performers. However, the central goal has always been to perform as wide a variety of pieces as possible and make use of the excellent venues Mývatn has to offer: the Skjólbrekka community center with its Petrof grand piano, and Reykjahlíðarkirkja church, a more suitable venue for music of a different sort. Quite often, locals have joined in to lend their musical talents to the festival. Violinist Laufey Sigurðardóttir has managed the festival from the beginning.
